When we talk about how "close" a digital simulation comes to a target Pantone color, we are usually citing Delta-E, the standard numerical measure of the difference between two colors. A Delta-E of 1.0 represents roughly the smallest difference a trained eye can detect under controlled conditions; values of 2 to 3 are generally acceptable for commercial work and look like a match to most viewers; differences above 5 become obvious side by side.
