Our Lamination Process, Step by Step
Lamination bonds a thin polyester or polypropylene film to your printed sheet using heat and pressure. After your job comes off our offset or digital presses, printed sheets are given time to dry and cure so trapped solvents and moisture don't cause bubbling or delamination later. We then feed the sheets through a heated roll laminator that applies the film under consistent temperature and tension, which prevents wrinkling, silvering, and edge lift. Once the laminated sheets cool and set, the work moves to our cutting and bindery department for trimming, scoring, folding, or die cutting. Because every stage happens under one roof in Manhattan, we can catch issues early and keep the whole job moving on schedule.
Films & Substrates We Run
We laminate coated and uncoated paper stocks, cover weights, and card stocks commonly used for business cards, brochures, menus, and book covers. Film thickness is measured in mils, typically ranging from a light 1.5 mil for flexible pieces up to a rigid 10 mil for heavy-use items like menus and ID cards. Thicker films add stiffness and durability; thinner films keep folded pieces flexible. Soft-touch, matte, gloss, linen, and scratch-resistant films each behave a little differently on press, so for unusual stocks or heavy ink coverage we recommend a quick proof or test sheet before running the full quantity. Durable menus are our most common lamination job, and the reason so many hospitality groups rely on us for restaurant menu printing.
Durability & Performance
A laminate film acts as a sealed barrier against water, grease, fingerprints, and abrasion, which is why laminated menus and instruction cards hold up to constant handling far better than coated paper alone. Matte and soft-touch films resist visible fingerprints and scuffing, while gloss maximizes color vibrancy at the cost of showing the occasional smudge. For interior signage and window displays, lamination also shields ink from UV exposure to slow fading. The same protective films go onto many of the custom business signs we print for storefronts and offices across the city. Outdoor or high-wear applications generally call for our thicker, scratch-resistant film and double-sided coverage for full edge-to-edge protection.
File Prep & Finishing Notes
Supply print-ready PDFs in CMYK at 300 DPI with at least 0.125" of bleed and your important text kept inside a safe margin from the trim. If your piece will be folded or scored, let us know up front, since heavier laminate films can crack along a fold without a proper score; we score after laminating to keep the film intact. Lamination pairs especially well with spot UV, foil stamping, and embossing, but those finishes interact with the film, so plan them together rather than as an afterthought. Matte and soft-touch laminate are also the ideal base for a high-gloss spot UV contrast effect.

For most projects, lamination adds about one business day to production, with specialty finishes and large runs sometimes needing a second day.
