How Color Is Created on Wide-Format Presses

Wide-format inkjet presses build all colors from a set of ink channels. Standard systems use CMYK (four channels), while extended-gamut systems add Light Cyan, Light Magenta, Light Black, Orange, Green, and/or Violet — typically six to twelve channels total. These additional channels expand the reproducible color gamut well beyond standard CMYK, allowing large format presses to simulate a much broader range of Pantone and custom colors.

A contour cut line must be drawn as a vector path, assigned to a named spot color the RIP recognizes as a cutting instruction (such as a "CutContour" swatch), and set to overprint so it does not knock a white outline out of your artwork. The cut path should sit on its own layer, separate from the printable artwork, and the spot swatch must be defined as a spot color — not a process color — or the RIP may try to print it instead of routing it to the cutter.
