How We Print for the Theater
A production's print run is part of the audience experience. Here is how we approach the materials, the stocks, and the deadlines that come with a live show.
Programs & Playbills
A nightly program has to look polished, distribute fast, and survive a full run of handling. We typically print interiors on an 80# or 100# coated text in gloss, silk, or matte, then pair them with a heavier cover stock so the booklet keeps its shape. Programs up to roughly 48 to 64 pages are saddle-stitched for speed and economy; thicker souvenir books move to perfect binding so the spine can be printed and titled. Because we run offset and digital under one roof, a long opening-week run and a short reprint for a cast change can both ship from the same color-managed environment.
Window Cards & Posters
The traditional Broadway window card is a 14 by 22 inch poster on heavy card stock, and we print it that way along with lobby one-sheets, three-sheets, and oversized displays. Key art lives or dies on color, so we calibrate to a consistent gray balance and tone curve and can hold a Pantone match across the run. Coatings matter outdoors and under lobby lighting: a matte or soft-touch laminate cuts glare and resists fingerprints, while a gloss UV makes saturated key art pop. For street-level and outdoor placement we move to large-format substrates and weather-durable inks. Everything at that scale runs through our large format printing department, from three-sheets to full building wraps.
Campaign & Promotional Pieces
Around the show sits a full marketing campaign: announcement postcards, direct-mail flyers, press and media kits, street-team handbills, and discount cards. We keep these visually locked to the show's key art so a postcard, a Playbill cover, and a lobby banner all read as one brand. Postcards and flyers run on coated cover stocks with the option of spot UV or foil on a logo; press kits can be assembled as folders with printed inserts. Variable-data printing lets a mailing carry personalized names, seating offers, or performance dates without slowing the run.
Souvenir Books & Merchandise
Souvenir programs are keepsakes, so the finishing does the heavy lifting. We build them on richer 100# silk or uncoated text, then add soft-touch lamination, spot UV, foil stamping, embossing, or a die-cut cover to mark a limited edition. French folds and tipped-in inserts give a commemorative edition extra weight in the hand. Alongside the books we print collectible postcards, cast-recording inserts, and other printed memorabilia, all produced in-house so color and registration stay consistent from the cover through the last interior page.
File Prep & Turnaround
Send press-ready PDF/X-1a or PDF/X-4 files built in CMYK at 300 dpi, with a 0.125 inch bleed on all four sides and live text held at least 0.25 inch inside the trim. Convert any colors you do not intend to run as spot separations, and embed or outline your fonts. Our prepress team preflights every file, flags RGB blacks or low-resolution art, and returns a proof before anything goes to press. We confirm the production schedule with your quote, with rush options when a preview shifts or a review changes the calculus. Local delivery covers any theater in NYC, and we coordinate shipping to venues nationwide for touring productions.

Most theater programs run on a coated text weight such as 80# or 100# gloss or matte for the interior, paired with a heavier 80# or 100# cover stock so the booklet holds up to a full run. Souvenir books often move up to 100# silk text for a richer hand feel, and we can spec uncoated stocks when a production wants a more tactile, editorial look. We help match the stock to the page count and the binding method so the spine lies flat and the book opens cleanly.
Saddle-stitch binding is the standard for programs up to roughly 48 to 64 pages and keeps unit costs low for nightly distribution. For thicker souvenir books and commemorative editions we use perfect binding, which gives a flat printed spine you can title. We handle both in-house, so page count, bleed, and creep are accounted for before the job goes to press.
Soft-touch or matte lamination on the cover resists fingerprints under lobby lights, while spot UV, foil stamping, and embossing add depth to a title treatment or logo. We also offer die-cut covers, French folds, and tipped-in inserts for limited editions. Each finish is produced in-house, which keeps color and registration consistent from cover to interior.

Yes. As a G7-calibrated shop we calibrate to a shared gray balance and tone curve, so a show’s key art reads the same on a window card, a Playbill cover, a lobby banner, and a direct-mail postcard even when those pieces run on different presses. For critical brand colors we can build and hold a Pantone match across the campaign.
