Our Packaging Design Process

From product analysis to printed packaging — a disciplined process that delivers results. The same path carries a concept through to finished retail packaging ready for the shelf.

01

Brief & Product Analysis

We start by understanding your product dimensions, weight, fragility, regulatory requirements, retail environment, and brand positioning. We analyze competitive packaging and identify opportunities to differentiate on shelf.

02

Structural Design & Die Line

Our structural designers create the physical box engineering: dimensions, material selection, flap configurations, closures, and inserts. We produce a die line (cutting template) that becomes the foundation for graphic design.

03

Graphic Design & Artwork

Brand graphics are designed directly on the die line template, accounting for folds, panels, flaps, and glue areas. We present photorealistic 3D mockups so you can see how the finished package will look from every angle before printing.

04

Prototype & Production

We produce a physical prototype for fit testing, structural evaluation, and color approval. Once approved, production-ready files go directly to our print floor. Short runs can be digitally printed; long runs go on offset presses with custom dies.

Design + Production Under One Roof

Most packaging design studios hand off files to a separate printer. At VSL Print, our designers sit steps away from our presses, die cutters, and finishing equipment. That proximity means faster prototyping, more accurate color, and zero miscommunication between design intent and printed result. Luxury builds that call for foil, embossing, or spot UV draw on the same in-house specialty printing services.

We design all types of commercial packaging including folding cartons, rigid boxes, corrugated shipping boxes, sleeve packaging, pillow boxes, mailer boxes, retail display packaging, blister card packaging, bags, pouches, and custom structural designs. Our team works with paperboard, corrugated, rigid board, and specialty substrates.

We handle both structural and graphic design. Structural design involves engineering the physical box shape, dimensions, closures, and die line. Graphic design covers the visual artwork, branding, typography, and print specifications that go on the structure. Many projects require both, and having one team handle the complete design ensures graphics align perfectly with folds, panels, and structural elements.

Yes. For food, beverage, cosmetic, and supplement packaging, we design with required regulatory elements in mind: nutrition facts panels, ingredient lists, allergen warnings, net weight statements, barcode placement, and required legal copy. We ensure these elements are properly positioned and legible while maintaining strong shelf presence.

Packaging design costs vary based on complexity. A simple sleeve or mailer box design starts around $500-800. A full retail packaging design with structural engineering, multiple panels, and regulatory compliance typically ranges from $1,500-4,000. Complete packaging line designs for multiple SKUs receive volume pricing. Every project includes a detailed quote before we begin.

Absolutely. We produce physical prototypes (white box samples and printed proofs) so you can evaluate the structure, test assembly, check fit with your product, and approve color and print quality before committing to a full production run. Digital mockups are provided during the design phase, and physical samples follow once the design is approved.

Yes. E-commerce packaging has specific requirements: it must protect products during shipping, create a memorable unboxing experience, and often needs to work as the outer shipping container. We design branded mailer boxes, tissue paper, stickers, insert cards, and custom packing materials that turn a delivery into a brand moment.

We deliver production-ready die line files in Adobe Illustrator (.ai) format with all artwork, bleeds, and die line specifications. We also provide PDF proofs, 3D mockup renderings, and die line templates. Files include proper color separations (CMYK plus any spot colors), barcode files, and complete print specifications.

Yes, and this is one of our biggest advantages. We design and produce packaging under one roof, which eliminates the communication gaps that occur when design and production are handled by different companies. From concept to cartons on your shelf, VSL Print handles the complete process.
