Design built for the press, not just the screen

Most design problems show up at the press, not on the monitor. A logo looks crisp in a slideshow and falls apart at 2 inches on a business card. A brand blue glows on screen and turns purple in CMYK. An edge-to-edge photo gets a white sliver after trimming because nobody built in bleed. VSL Print designs to avoid all of it, because the same team that draws your artwork also runs it.

We are a family-owned NYC commercial printer founded in 2009, formerly known as Varick Street Litho, with 100% in-house production: offset, digital, large format, finishing, and bindery all under one roof. Our design team works a few feet from the presses, so when we hand off a file it is built for the exact stock, ink, and finishing the job will run on. That tight loop is why our work reaches the sheet without surprises and why our color is calibrated to G7 standards — a measurable gray-balance discipline.

Whether you need a full brand identity, a 48-page catalog, a folding carton with a clean die line, or just a tune-up on files you already have, we can take the project from concept to a press-ready PDF, or run it straight through to finished, bound, and delivered.

What we build into every file

The prepress details that decide whether a design survives the press.

Color built for CMYK

Screens glow in RGB; presses lay down CMYK ink. We design with the press in mind, flagging RGB-only colors, neon greens, and deep blues that shift on paper, and we specify Pantone spot inks when a brand color has to stay exact across every reprint.

Bleed, trim, and safe margins

Every layout we deliver carries a 0.125-inch bleed, crop marks, and a safe margin that keeps logos and text clear of the trim. That is the difference between a clean edge and a white sliver after cutting.

Resolution and image prep

Raster art is built or supplied at 300 DPI at final size, and large-format graphics are scaled to viewing distance. We color-correct, retouch, and sharpen images so they hold up under ink instead of going muddy or pixelated.

Type and finishing

We set type at sizes that stay legible after printing and account for finishing up front, so a fold, a die line, a spot UV hit, or a foil area is mapped before the file ever reaches the press.

Designed for real stock, ink, and finishing

Good design choices start with the material. A matte uncoated text weight reads warm and tactile for a stationery suite or a literary catalog; a gloss or silk coated cover snaps with saturated photography for a retail brochure; a heavy 16pt or 18pt cover stock with a soft-touch laminate gives a business card or invitation real presence in the hand. We help you pick the substrate during design, then build the artwork so the ink coverage, contrast, and color sit correctly on that exact paper.

We design across the full range we print in-house: brand identity and logo systems, brochures, catalogs, sell sheets, and annual reports; folded mailers and direct-mail pieces; menus and hospitality collateral; event and presentation materials for Broadway productions and gallery openings; pitch decks and reports for Wall Street firms; and packaging, labels, and shelf-ready graphics for luxury retailers and consumer brands. Finishing options like spot UV, foil stamping, embossing, scoring, die cutting, and perfect or saddle-stitch binding are factored into the layout from the first concept.

Turnaround depends on scope. A focused project such as a business card, flyer, or file cleanup often moves in a few business days, while a full identity or a multi-page catalog runs longer through concept, revision, and proofing. When a deadline is tight, rush production is available, and because design and printing live in the same building we can compress the handoff that usually slows a job down.

Design + Print Under One Roof

When your designers and printers work in the same building, good things happen. No miscommunication, no file conversion issues, no color surprises. Just seamless execution from concept to finished product.

  • Direct communication between designers and press operators
  • Files prepared specifically for our equipment
  • Color proofing on actual production paper
  • Faster turnaround with no handoff delays
  • Immediate adjustments if anything needs tweaking
  • Consistent results from project to project

Print Design Services NYC

Print Design Services in New York City

What makes print design different from screen design is that the final product is a physical object — the weight of the stock, the texture of a finish, and the way a fold falls all matter as much as the layout. At VSL Print, design and production live under one roof, which is what makes our print design services unique: the team that designs your piece is the team that prints it, so nothing gets lost between the file and the press.

We provide design across every category we print. We specialize in brand identity and logo systems, print design for brochures, catalogs, and collateral, packaging design, signage and environmental graphics, and large-format design for banners and displays. Whether you need a full identity built from scratch or production-ready files prepared from your existing brand, our designers work in the formats and specifications your project needs.

Because we know exactly how a file behaves on our presses, our design work is print-ready from the start — correct bleeds, trim, color, and resolution, with dielines and foil layers built the way production needs them. That removes the back-and-forth that slows most agency-to-printer handoffs and is often where projects go wrong. Designing for our own production means fewer surprises, faster turnaround, and a finished piece that matches the proof.

From startups that need a first identity to established brands refreshing their collateral, New York companies come to us when a project needs both strong design and flawless production. We are equally happy helping with a single piece or an ongoing program, and because we handle the printing, finishing, and even installation in-house, one team stays accountable for the whole project from concept to delivery.

Good print design also means choosing the right materials. Our designers will recommend the stock, finish, and binding that bring a design to life — a soft-touch cover with spot UV, a foil-stamped logo, a die-cut shape, or a specific paper weight that makes a piece feel substantial. Because those finishing options are produced in the same building, we can design toward them with confidence rather than hoping an outside vendor can execute them.

Every project starts with a conversation about the goal, the audience, and the budget, and from there we offer as much or as little as you need — concept and art direction, production design, or simply prepping files for print. Tell us what you are making, share any existing brand assets, and request a free quote, and our team will recommend the approach that fits the project and the deadline.

Yes, our in-house design team offers brand identity, logo design, brochure and catalog layout, packaging design, and print-ready file preparation.

Yes, we offer file preparation services including color correction, resolution optimization, bleed setup, and conversion to print-ready formats.

We start with a creative brief, provide initial concepts, refine based on feedback, and deliver print-ready files. We scope the timeline with your project brief.

Design is billed separately from printing. We offer complimentary design consultations for print customers, and simple file prep may be included with larger orders.

For editing and layout we prefer native files (Adobe InDesign, Illustrator, or Photoshop) with fonts and linked images included. For final output, a press-ready PDF/X-1a or PDF/X-4 with fonts embedded, images at 300 DPI, and a 0.125-inch bleed is ideal. If you only have a low-resolution JPG or a logo pulled from a website, our team can rebuild or vectorize it before production.

Screens display in RGB and printing presses reproduce color in CMYK, so some shift is normal, particularly with bright greens, deep blues, and neon tones. We design in CMYK, specify Pantone spot colors for critical brand colors, and provide a contract proof on production stock so you approve real color before the run. As a G7-calibrated shop, our gray balance and tone reproduction are calibrated to a measurable standard across offset and digital.

Yes. We design folded cartons, labels, and retail packaging around a structural die line so panels, glue flaps, and fold lines line up correctly, and we lay out large-format pieces like banners, posters, and signage scaled to viewing distance. Because the same building handles offset, digital, large format, and finishing, the design is built for the exact equipment that will produce it.

We map finishing into the artwork from the start. Spot UV, foil stamping, embossing, and die-cut shapes are built as separate spec layers so the press and bindery know exactly where each effect lands. Planning these in the design stage avoids registration problems and keeps your turnaround on schedule.
